The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
