The Actor's Honest Musical Selections: Starting with Childhood Loves to Peculiar Aversions
The initial track I was captivated by
My first recollection is walking into a space at nursery school where they were blasting Yellow Submarine by the Fab Four. I was mesmerized by the sound effects, and John Lennon bellowing: “Full speed ahead!” When it arrived at the hook, I remember thinking: “This must be music!”
The very first 45 I acquired
When I was eight years old, I won a contest at school to choose a brand new record to play at the mini disco we had on Fridays. My teacher took me to a local store, and I picked out Come Back My Love by Darts. The first single I bought with my own allowance was Mull of Kintyre by Wings from a record shop in Colne. It was No 1 at the time, and I chose it when my dad mentioned that it was by a former member of the Beatles.
The track I sing at sing-along
I honestly do not enjoy public singing and steer clear at all costs. But under duress, I’d choose Summer Wind by Ol' Blue Eyes.
The piece I strangely know every lyric to
I just discovered that I know pretty much every word to The Boy in the Bubble, You Can Call Me Al, and each track on Graceland by the legendary songwriter.
The ideal track to blast at a gathering
It hinges on what stage of the event you are at. At the start it would most likely be I Heard It Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye. As the night wears on, I’d transition into the Artist, the Stones and Bowie, and when it hits its peak, Phat Planet by the electronic act, Born Slippy .NUXX by the techno pioneers, and Ascension by Gorillaz, which is an undeniable hit.
The song I can no longer bear
I inexplicably loathe Mr Brightside by the Las Vegas band.
The best song to have sex to
Come Together by the Beatles.
The album that transformed me
When I was 12 and starting to learn the guitar, I’d only listen to classic rock ’n’roll, and was consumed by The King, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, the New Orleans legend, Buddy Holly and the rockabilly star. Then my babysitter brought round Let There Be Rock by AC/DC. It was still rock’n’roll, but it was high voltage rock ’n’roll. As soon as he dropped the vinyl on the record player, I was hooked.

What’d I Say in its full glory by The Genius.
The track that gets me emotional
All music makes me emotional. The Queen of Soul, Frank Sinatra, Elvis and the Beatles all stir my emotions because of the tune and sheer perfection of the singing. But The Ocean by Richard Hawley strikes a chord without fail.
The song I’d like to be played at my memorial service
Elvis. If I’m given a cremation, I’ll have Burning Love. If I’m laid to rest in the ground, I’ll have Way Down.
