French authorities to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are currently postponing the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
