European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
