At least thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
