Astronaut Shares Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
