Administration Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Third Week

The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
